While "mavericks" attain mythological status like MLK, they were real people that pushed against the system and their actions and those who were inspired them changed it.

I think the opposite is true. Mavericks are both real people and symbols. Throughout our history the powerful have been pulled down by whistleblowers who uncover them and result in system bending.
