There are tens of thousands of fascinating stories in history about characters that played a greater role in shaping history than the story of Yasuke. Arguably, it is precisely because of the color of his skin, that Yasuke has been chosen to write about.

I am a history buff and one of my interests is the Sengoku period. Yasuke is not a particularly important character in history, but an unusual one and so gets mentioned when talking about the various non-Japanese who became samurais.

So rather than Yasuke's skin color causing racist resistance to his story being told, his skin color is precisely why his story is being told today. It was unusual enough to be documenteds and serves to show the achievements of minorities in past cultures.

What is particularly nice about Yasuke as a "character" is that historians know enough to shape a narrative, but not enough to restrict the license of storytellers to create a larger-than-life character.

I look forward to these kinds of movies. The story more than the race of the character or even the history behind the story is what is important.
