The US does not need to split apart, it only needs to curb Federalism by more specifically limiting the powers of the Federal government to foreign policy, defense, and interstate trade in addition to insuring all US citizens enjoy the civil rights and unalienable rights they are entitled to.
Progressives struggle with this degree of separation because their ideology is not "competitive" (just follow the moving vans from New York and California to Texas and Florida) and unless they can "print" money they cannot finance their policies.
But Republicans are no slouching at spending money the government does not have.
A balanced budget amendement and term limits are needed at the Federal level. Such amendments would go a long way to eliminating any need for states to go their separate ways.
