Several not understood concepts behind "Free Speech"
Freedom of Speech is an abbreviation of Free Political Speech. The government has a right to limit speech that is not political in nature. So, we tolerate people that promote racism and other hate speech aimed at a group, that is a "political" expression. But when you direct it at an individual it is not. Employers have a right to limit free speech, when workers are "on the clock". People have a right to limit free speech in their homes. Interesting we have been far too loose enforcing restrictions on "hate speech" aimed at politicians. You can "hate" the politician, but when speech calls for violence against an individual, it has gone too far.
Free Speech recognizes that a cost of free speech can be violence but accepts that cost in exchange for the importance of free speech in a society that elects is leaders.
To minimize the "dangers" of "free speech", we need to educate our children and make clear several core values that define our country. First and foremost, individual human rights, civil rights, and property rights. In other words, there is no place for identity politics in our society, though avoiding it is impossible, we can despise it and mock it. If we educate people to reject identity politics, we become "one nation" in time.
Second, tolerance. When people are raised to value tolerance, then "hate" speech is less dangerous. If people are raised to believe in identity groups comprised of the oppressed and oppressors, then hate speech is a preclude to violence. Group identity combined with Marxist ideology condones and even encourages violence.
Integration. As a nation of immigrants, we can only function if our goal is to "integrate" and not segregate. With the context of "individualism" every person can be different but accepts every other person as an equal citizen with equal rights. We tolerate behaviors we don't like as long as they don't infringe on the rights of others. In time, we begin to "blend" culturally, ethnically, and even racially.
