Republicans' ideology embraces classical liberalism, which is grounded in individual freedom. Hence their resistance to mandates, big government, regulation, etc. It also reflects their embrace of capitalism.

Democratic ideology these days is grounded in 19th Century Marxism. Where government becomes your parent and in exchange for obedience, it cares for you. Even simple issues like:

Education: school vouchers... individual freedom vs public school only... group-imposed education

or

Taxation and entitlements: safety net for the needy, otherwise individual economic success vs income and wealth redistribution to achieve "equity", otherwise the "children" will fight

or

Free speech: Free speech to the point of tolerating offensive speech vs censorship, politically correct thinking, and cancel culture

All incorporate the underlying ideology of classical liberalism vs Marxism. To be clear, I am not demeaning Marxism or classical liberalism, just highlighting the differences.

If you want to celebrate your individualism become a Republican and fight against government control of your behavior. If you want "Big Brother" caring for you from cradle to grave even if Big Brother can be abusive at times, then go Democrat. Remember, the goal of Marxism is "the greater good" regardless of who has to get hurt to achieve it. Classical liberalism pretty much says everyone is on their own until you infringe on the rights of others.

Go back and study the history of those two ideologies, then look at the party platforms. As for the characteristic of narcissism, JFK, Nixon, and Obama were among the most narcissistic Presidents alongside Trump in my lifetime. All three think very highly of themselves and looked down to some extent at others. Meanwhile, Ford, Carter, Bush 1, and even Reagan were far more down to earth. Narcissism is a personality trait found in leaders of both parties. But more common among Democrats simply because it takes a narcissist to think they know what is best for others.
