Ideologies have definitions.

I am a liberal in line with the original meaning of liberalism. Those of us that embrace that original meaning are called classical liberals.

Liberalism emerged in the 17th and 18th centuries from the beliefs that God was evident in nature and by observing God's natural law one could discern certain things. Specifically, that all humans are born with a desire to live, to be free, and pursue their self-defined purpose (which the term happiness was substituted to distinguish it from some concept of collective purpose.

Progressive liberal ideology is the adaptation of Marxism, a 19th century ideology, that defined people as belonging to oppressors or the oppressed based on economic and social class to an ideology that defines people based on identity.

African American scholars in the 50s were leaders in this new ideology, citing identity groups like African Americans as an oppressed class and whites as oppressors. They termed this movement as "wokeism". Since then, "wokeism" has evolved to mean seeing the world as Marx did but with a much more granular view of oppressors and the oppressed based on many other factors than income, wealth, and social class. Identity groups can be labeled as oppressor groups or oppressed groups based on the power and wealth they wield in society.

As I said, I am a liberal. I did not say liberals were "progressive liberals". Nor did I say "progressive liberals" are the "only" progressives. Neither are true.

"Progressives" are people who believe society needs to keep evolving towards some undefined ideal society. Different ideologies emerge under the umbrella of "progressive" thought regarding how society should operate. In that context, "progressive liberalism" is one such ideology.

So, to clarify, "classical liberals" reject Marxism, since its "collective" group ideology clashes with liberalism which is focused on the "individual rights" of each human. Someone that claims they are a "progressive" is simply someone that think society should change "for the better" (others may disagree with what that means, but because "better" is subjective the term can mean whatever you want it to). But progressive liberal is a defined ideology ground in "group identity" which derives its "beliefs" in Marxism. But no need to believe me... do some deep research into the evolution of Marxism to Wokeism to Progressive Liberalism...
