I guess people are all different.

But I think your point about people turning to God in times of stress might explain the stress and anxiety, they feel.

It took me decades to really embrace the Lord's Prayer especially the part... Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done... ".

I prayed a version of this before I had major open-heart surgery that included an aorta repair for an aneurysm. I immediately felt comforted, knowing that whatever happened would be God's will and I was fine with that. Live or die, the outcome would be fine.

Young Christians almost seem to think of God as someone to call like 911. Who will "fix" things according to their will when they call on Him if only they can get through to Him.

To this latter point, the pray the same prayer over and over again.

I did add at the end of my prayer, that if God wanted my input, I would love to see my grandchildren grow up... but if that was not His will, then I was ready to die.

Some might call the comfort that comes from "fatalism". But I think it is more than that... it is paired with confidence that God is in control.
