I do not think the majority of people that voted for Trump “like” Trump. I think the majority of people that voted for Trump preferred his policies. They were not given fifty viable choices… just two… they chose Trump…
They wanted less taxes and regulation. They wanted job and wage growth.
They wanted justice reform. They wanted a return to classical liberalism instead of identity politics. They wanted a Supreme Court grounded in the Constitution. They wanted greater religious liberty.
They wanted better trade deals with foreign countries. They wanted less involvement in foreign wars. They wanted border security.
They wanted to reverse the opioid epidemic. They did not want health care nationalized. They wanted a return to our close ties with Israel.
They were tied of political correctness.
They did not favor “bigger” government.
The point is that Trump’s base has been around 30–35% of voters. The rest are comparing Trump’s proposals with those of the progressive Democrats. You do not need to be empathetic with those that do not see things as you do, you can continue to be a “majority” party in a minority of states or maybe you can find a middle ground that is not really your cup of tea… but has enough support to win…
The goal of government is not to make everyone happy… that’s impossible… but to arrive at a position, that the vast majority of people can “live with”. Go to far right or to far left, and you have left that position behind… So don’t be empathetic, but realistic…
