Hamas has been brutally violent against the Palestinians, since they seized power. They do not allow free elections and use Palestinians as shields and for political propaganda.

Hamas is a cross between an autocratic government, an organized criminal cartel, a terrorist organization and an extension of Iran's political power in the Middle East. There is zero evidence it puts the needs of the Palestinian people first. And its leaders have been siphoning off billions as they accumulate huge personal fortunes.

You may want Hamas to be the organization you describe... but it isn't. Your attribution would be the same as saying Putin is fighting for the interests of the Russian people, when they are unlikely to get anything out of Ukraine, other than dead sons, husbands, fathers, and uncles, and cousins.

The saying that where your treasure lies, tells others where your heart lies. For Hamas, their treasure is accruing to the benefit of their leaders.
