Meanwhile, I was the CFO for one of the nation's largest Medicare program administrators. I would listen to Congressmen promise how they would recover billions in Medicare fraud and abuse to fund new entitlements. Those auditors worked for me. And we did recover billions in fraud, but most of the Medicare "stealing" is legal abuse and not fraud... and all the promises were nothing but BS. It was hard to get the DOJ to pursue fraud cases as it was unless it was a single entity committing massive fraud with deep pockets. Even more frustrating is that when we tried to curb "legal abuse" we got calls from those same representatives to stop it.
I am a CPA and earlier in my career was involved in tax planning and responding to IRS audits. When it comes to large companies, most companies are not going to risk their whole business committing fraud, so again most of the fraud comes from companies with no cash to recover.
I do support tax audits by the IRS in general as they do keep people "honest". But the money is going to come from people who would rather pay the IRS than defend their tax returns. If you look at the job ads for the position and its requirement that agents be willing to carry a gun... I don't see that being necessary when you audit large corporations and billionaires... Do you see agents storming IBM with guns or even going after Mark Zuckerberg carrying "heat"?
